Day 3: Onward to Shamrock, TX (6/23/08)

It's about 11am and the girlz have returned from the UFO museum. Once again, the temperature was going to be a scorcher! We doused ourselves with water before heading out.

I must say that riding the I-40 through Texas was nothing spectacular. Just open plains, cows, and small towns along the I-40. Let me tell you...HEAT & THE SMELL OF COW SHIT, DON'T MIX WELL. *aaaaccccckkkkk!!!!* I did see a dead armadillo with it's feet up in the air.

What I have noticed so far on this trip, most towns seem deserted after 5pm. Something that I'm not accustom to. No one walking the streets, no cars around, just quiet...then we come rollin' in.

We get into Shamrock and decide to stop at an old-fashioned Conoco gas station to take some pics. As I pull in, my foot slips on some gravel and I can feel the bike start falling to the right. Jett looks back towards me and doesn't say a word. I just have this look on my face (which no one can see because of my face mask & glasses) and, I did everything in my power not to let that bike drop because I did NOT want that captured on film. Phew...John was nowhere around but Jessie was. I managed to pull a Hulk and upright my bike and park it. PHEW!!!!!! That would have sucked.

With the gas prices rising, I thought it only fitting that I pose for the appropriate shot!

We check into our hotel and decide to order pizza and get some beer. The problem is, Shamrock is a "dry" town. John went into Oklahoma to get a couple 30-packs of beer. We asked the front desk if it were okay to eat in the breakfast area and she said, "not a problem." We gave her beer, pizza and Hostess Ding-Dongs.

This was the first time since we left the trip that we actually relaxed, drank beer and munched on all sorts of Ding-Dongs, Twinkies, donuts, Zingers, etc! Then...the girlz decided they wanted to go set off some fireworks that Nancy had purchased back in New Mexico. They asked the front desk where they would be able to set them off and she put a call into the Sheriff, who told them where.

At first, I was told that a couple of trucks would be coming to take us to the spot but I quickly realized, the girlz were hoppin' on their motorcycles. I was in no condition to ride, so I stayed back. Well, hours later, Biby comes into the room with a shocked look on her face. Needless to say, the girlz were all back safe. I won't go into details as I was not there to witness it. :) BUT, I will say this...it involved a semi, a ditch or two and facing the wrong way. Okay, 'nuff said. :D

Woke up, packed my bags and went out for some english muffin, yogurt & coffee. Not everyone was awake. Jett was blogging away and getting ready to head out. Somehow, we convinced her to wait for everyone. Carol had taken off at 4am. I don't know why. We had a goal of getting out early every day until we reached Memphis, since we were on a deadline for Graceland and Presley Place. After that, no real deadline to meet other than Rolla, MO, where Lilia's friend was hosting a bbq dinner for us.

Went across the street to gas up, bought a Route 66 & Texas state pin.

Next stop, Van Buren, AR.
